Residential Case Studies
Here is a small selection of some residential flooring projects that we have undertaken, coupled with case studies this will hopefully give you an insight into hardwood flooring and the process’s involved when fitting solid wood floors.
Dining Room
This is a beautiful example of a solid oak floor, here is a step by step account of the works involved.
- Firstly we extracted the existing tiled floor.
- Once we had extracted the tiles the concrete sub floor had to be prepared. To do this we skimmed the floor and applied a latex screed.
- We then left the floor for 3 days for the screed to dry.
- We then applied a Damp Proof Membrane (D.P.M). This stops any moisture or damp rising through the concrete. If your sub floor is concrete it is essential to have a D.P.M applied before the installation of a solid wood floor. Failure to do this could result in moisture or damp affecting the oak floor, causing it to cup or lift.
- Once the D.P.M has been applied the dry time is 8 hours.
- Firstly we installed the centre piece incorporating a Merbau border.
- We then laid the oak floor unfinished on a 45 degree angle.
- Any internal doors were then trimmed that required it.
- The oak floor was then left for a week to enable the timber to acclimatise. During this week the floor was used as normal.
- We then returned and sanded the floor, with the sawdust we collected we mixed it with a resin and created a filler the same colour as the floor. We used this to fill any small gaps or possible imperfections in the floor. The floor was then primed, we then used a matt high traffic anti scratch lacquer to finish the floor.
- Once the final coat of lacquer is applied you are able to walk on the floor in socks or light footwear after 2-3 hours. We recommend leaving heavy furniture until the following morning to give the lacquer time to harden off.

Living Area
This is an example of a neutral solid oak floor. Here is an account of the process involved in laying this solid wood floor.
- First of all we extracted the existing floor, in this case it was carpeted.
- Flooring was then laid, running continuously through both rooms. Pre – finished boards were used in this case.
- The sub floor (floorboard) was then prepared.
- Solid oak skirting boards were then fitted to finish off the room.
- Any internal doors were trimmed if required.
